Actos and Avandia Double Fracture Risk in Diabetes Patients

A new study that analyzed over 12 years of data from the UK suggests that the diabetes drugs Avandia and Actos may double or even triple the likelihood of a bone fracture in diabetes patients. Swiss researchers compared about a thousand patients who suffered fractures with 3,728 matched patients who did not experience fractures. The results were troubling to say the least.

Another Lawsuit Filed Over Avandia

On Tuesday another lawsuit filed against pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) over the diabetes drug Avandia. The suit alleges that 59-year-old Pat Kelly developed heart problems and eventually had to undergo bypass surgery as a result of taking Avandia. The once blockbuster medication has recently been linked to a substantial increased risk in heart failure, heart attack and stroke. This one of several lawsuits that have been filed over the last several months claiming that GSK failed to adequately warn patients taking the drug of the serious potential side effects. The company is standing behind the drug and says that they will defend against any litigation.
Study Confirms Avandia Increases Risk of Bone Fracture

A new study has been released that demonstrates a link between the diabetes medication Avandia and an increased risk in bone fracture in women taking the drug. According to the study, women taking Avandia have twice the chance of suffering fractures than those taking the generic medication glyburide and an 81 percent greater chance of fracture than those taking generic metformin. This increased risk was not observed in men.
