In this week's issue of The Journal of the American Medical Association a pair of new articles add more fuel to the fire surrounding the type-2 diabetes medication Avandia. The articles also points the finger at Actos, a similar drug. The new studies allege that Avandia exponentially increases the chance of heart failure and heart attacks.

On July 30, 2007, an FDA panel voted 22-1 in favor of keeping the diabetes drug, Avandia, on the market despite the fact that 42 different studies have shown that taking Avandia increases the risk of heart attacks by 43 percent.

Rosiglitazone, approved in 1999, is an anti-diabetic drug used to treat people with type 2 diabetes. Rosiglitazone is in the thiazolidinedione class and marketed under the brand name Avandia, by the pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline.
Avandia works by helping to restore the body's proper response to insulin, thereby lowering blood sugar.
